A genus consisting of four deciduous, pod-bearing trees, one native of N. America, the others of E. Asia, and most nearly related among hardy trees to Gleditsia. They have doubly pinnate leaves, flowers in racemes or panicles, and large thick pods; the flowers are regular, being composed of five equal-sized petals, and a tubular, five-lobed calyx, with no indication of the pea-flower shape so common in this family.
