Halimium

Family

Cistaceae

A genus of about seven species closely related to Helianthemum, to which they have been united. They differ from that genus in having a very short, straight style and three or five sepals, whereas Helianthemum has an elongated style, curved or bent at the base, and always five sepals. They require the same cultural conditions, and have no objection to chalky soils.

The genus Halimium, as here understood, is confined to the Old World, and has its centre of distribution in the Iberian peninsula, but ranges as far east as Syria and into France and N. Africa. Allied species in N. America, included in Halimium by Grosser, and earlier placed in the genus Crocanthemum, are not treated in this work.
