Lardizabalaceae

A genus of one or two species of climbing shrubs, the one described here confined to Chile. The leading characters are: Flowers functionally unisexual with six fleshy sepals, in two series of three, the much reduced petals (honey-leaves) opposite the sepals; functionally male flowers with six stamens united by their filaments into a short tube, enclosing three rudimentary carpels; functionally female flowers with three, sometimes six, erect carpels, each comprising a subcylindrical ovary surmounted by a conical papillose stigma, and with six free sterile stamens; fruit a sausage-shaped, many-seeded berry developed from one carpel.
