A genus of a single species allied to Rhododendron but with the anthers opening by slits instead of pores and the ovary three-celled (five or more in Rhododendron, very rarely four). It is even closer to Menziesia but the three-celled ovary and the hairy outer surface of the corolla distinguish it. The generic name refers to the appressed strigose hairs on the leaves, resembling those of Rhododendron section Tsusia Planch. emend. Maxim. (series Azalea subseries Obtusum).
