Asteranthera is one of three genera of gesneriads found only in the temperate rain forests of Chile and neighbouring parts of Argentina, each consisting of a single species. The other two are Mitraria and Sarmienta, but from these it is very distinct in shape of flower and indeed might be taken for a columnea. Botanically, however, the three genera are grouped together in the Mitrariƫae, characterised by the disc at the base of the flower forming a continuous ring, not broken into separate, irregular glands as in the genus Columnea.
