Little is known of this walnut, but it is akin to J. mandshurica and ailantifolia differing, however, in the following respects: the terminal leaflet is obovate, and thus very distinct in shape from the side leaflets, which are oblong; there is no patch of down above the scar left by the fallen leaf, as in the J. mandshurica group. The species was discovered in Manchuria by Maximowicz, who described the nuts as cylindrical or oblong-oval, with a long tapering apex. J. stenocarpa has been grown on the continent as J. macrophylla, an appropriate name, for I have a leaf 2 ft 8 in. long, with only eleven leaflets, the terminal one 8 in. long by 5 in. wide; the largest side ones 71⁄2 in. long by 3 in. wide.
