A genus of about six species in E. Asia and the S.W. Pacific, mostly tropical or subtropical in distribution. It belongs to the same family as Ailanthus, differing in the axillary inflorescences and fleshy fruits. The specific epithet of the species described here refers to its resemblance to Quassia amara, which is the source of the intensely bitter quassia wood.
