Sycopsis

Family

Hamamelidaceae

A genus of about seven species of evergreen shrubs or trees, ranging from N.E. India to China and Malaysia. It is the only evergreen genus of the Hamamelis family represented in British gardens except for Distylium. The flowers lack petals and are either male or hermaphrodite, both types sometimes occurring in the same cluster. The hermaphrodite flowers are strongly protandrous, i.e., the stamens develop before the ovary and are shed before it reaches its full size. For a discussion of the flowers of this genus and the related Distylium, see Journ. Arn. Arb., Vol. 51 (1970), pp. 316-24 and 324-37.

An intergeneric hybrid between Sycopsis and Parrotia has been raised in Switzerland and was named × Sycoparrotia semidecidua by Endress and Anliker in 1968.
